Prescribed and Recommended textbooks

"Prescribed" textbooks are the books which the course Co-ordinator (academic staff) lists as essential reading and students are advised to purchase a copy of the  prescribed textbook.

"Recommended" textbooks are not compulsory but are extra reading materials should you wish to gain a more comprehensive background for your course.

Prescribed books are available in the library for a restricted borrowing period of one day or three days. The titles listed in this guide correspond to the official  2023 Comprehensive Wits book list. Use the course code for each school to locate the details and availability of prescribed/recommended books.

For schools not listed above kindly contact the Faculty for contact details of the respective school and make enquiries with the school, alternatively contact details may be accessed online.

*This Health Sciences book list is ONLY for first-year students in the Faculty of Health Sciences. All other students in the Faculty will receive their text book requirements from their course coordinators in the introductory lectures or on the e-learning portals.

Most UG textbooks can be found on  CLINICALKEY STUDENT which requires a username and password that You need to create. ( see infosheet link on how to create username and password below- nite same password can be used to login to Clinicalkey Student)

Open Access Textbooks

Open Access textbooks have been funded, published, and licensed to be freely used, adapted, and distributed. These books have been reviewed by academics from a variety of colleges and universities to assess their quality. Open textbooks can be downloaded at no cost, or printed at low cost. All textbooks are either used at multiple higher education institutions; or affiliated with an institution, scholarly society, or professional organization.

As part of the broader open educational resources movement, open textbooks increasingly are seen as a solution to challenges with traditionally published textbooks, such as access and affordability concerns.
