What is Plagiarism? 

 

If you express an idea without mentioning the source, or paste a passage of text without properly quoting it, you’re taking credit for someone else’s work.

Building on others’ work is a key part of academic writing, however…. 

It is important to clearly distinguish your own words and ideas from those of your sources.

Plagiarism is a serious offence and academic misconduct with serious consequences at WITS University.

Some examples of plagiarism include:                                                                                             

  • Using someone else's exact words without putting them in quotation marks.
  • Providing wrong citation details for information that isn't yours.
  • Handing in another person's assignment, or parts of it, as if it's your own.
  • Reusing your own work from a previous class without acknowledging it properly.
