Transformative Open Access Agreements

ABOUT TRANSFORMATIVE AGREEMENTS

Transformative agreements are those contracts negotiated between institutions (libraries, national and regional consortia) and publishers that transform the business model underlying scholarly journal publishing, moving from one based on toll access (subscription) to one in which publishers are remunerated a fair price for their open access publishing services. (Efficiency and Standards for Article Charges, ESAC).

Transformative agreements are also known as 'Read & Publish' agreements. Through transformative agreements Institutions are, in effect, redirecting their expenditures on subscriptions to cover open access article processing charges.

BENEFIT FOR WITS RESEARCHERS

Article Processing Charges (APCs) are covered partially/fully for researchers who choose to publish open access in journals under the publishers who have an agreement with Wits University.

Publishing Open Access increases broad access to the research output of Wits academics. This can promote progress and knowledge and, with the opportunity for greater readership, increase the impact of Wits research output.
