Useful information about WHSL and its services and Faculty of Health Sciences for academic staff members

Postgraduate Supervision: University Documents and Training

Useful advice for new supervisors can be found here. The Statement of Principles for Postgraduate Supervision is repeated in this document.

The Centre for Learning, Teaching and Development (CLTD) runs workshops for new supervisors, including an introduction to supervision, giving feedback to research students, and writing funding proposals. Contact Candice Michael at CLTD for details and course dates.

Ethics Clearance is required for all research that involves human subjects and animals. The Code of Ethics for Research on Human Subjects outlines best practice in this regard. There are two committees that consider submissions with regard to research on humans: those that involve medical research and those that are non-medical in nature. Click here for more information about both committees, including application forms and submission dates and deadlines.

WHSL Support for Postgraduate Students

Training: WHSL runs training courses by appointment for postgraduate students in the areas of searching for information, citing information, and managing references electronically. All health sciences databases listed are supported by WHSL, and training courses in any of these e-resources can be requested. Supervisors and course co-ordinators are urged to schedule training sessions for their students.

The Faculty of Health Sciences Style Manual for Higher Degrees is available for a nominal fee from WHSL. Contact Mr Devind Peter in this regard. The print Style Guide is currently supported  the WHSL Vancouver Citation Style Guide for Theses, Dissertations and Research Reports; and WHSL Citing the Medical Literature

Inter-Library Loans (ILL)

WHSL has an extensive e-journal collection, and you should check first to see if the full text of articles you need is available electronically in our own collection. Remember that older journals may be available only in print form. Set the search box to Journal Title before searching.

If it is not, request an ILL from another library. A library PIN is required to verify your identity as a Wits staff member or postgraduate student. All requests from academic staff and postgraduate students of the Faculty of Health Sciences are automatically directed to WHSL, provided that this form is used. Only local ILLs (those ILLs that are available in South Africa) are sourced by WHSL. Contact Mr Isaac Tshabalala for further information with regard to local ILLs. A nominal fee for this service is levied.

Contact WHSL Interlibrary Loans Tel. 011 7172350 with regard to ILLs that are not available in South Africa.

Postgraduate Hub

The Postgraduate Hub (adjacent to WHSL) is a computer lab for the use of postgraduate students. Consultation hours for statisticians are pasted on the door of the PG Hub. Swipe card access to the Hub is automatic for all postgraduate students registered for degrees at the Faculty of Health Sciences.

A new Postgraduate Hub has been established at the Wits Learning Centre at the C H Baragwanath Academic Hospital campus for the use of postgraduate students (including Registrars) based at Bara.

Postgraduate Protocol Submission Deadlines

Protocol submission deadlines depend on the School, Department or Division responsible for a particular subject area. Because actual dates fluctuate from year to year, please consult the Faculty Almanac for actual dates.
